RAINBOW LORIKEET |
|||||||
Rainbow Lorikeets live in the coastal lowlands of northern and eastern Australia. An introduced group lives in Perth, WA. This is a medium sized lorikeet with a red bill, blue head, green underparts, red-gold breastband and blue belly. Its call is a metallic screech often given off while in flight. Swift, noisy flocks search for flowering trees. Lorikeets mop up nectar with their brush tipped tongues. They also eat fruit, seed and insects. Large groups roost together, chattering and screeching before settling to sleep. A pair mates for life. The female is fed by the male while she incubates 2 white eggs in a tree hollow. Both parents feed the young. |
