PELICAN

pelican

The Australian Pelican may be seen anywhere in Australia where there is water and fish. Flocks of Pelicans fly high and far in search of fishing grounds.

This very large, black and white waterbird has short legs and a huge pink bill. All four of its toes are webbed. The wing span of the pelican is and average of 2.5 metres.

The call is a soft grunt or a creaking groan.

Pelicans feed on fish scooped up in their bills and throat pouches.

After heavy rain pelicans nest in large flocks on islands in inland lakes. Two eggs are laid on the ground, brooded by both parents in turn for 32-35 days. At 25 days chicks join group nurseries called crèches. They can fly at 3 months.
