ROSELLA

rosella

The Crimson Rosella lives in forest edges and woodland in eastern and south-eastern coastal Australia, from Cairns to SA.

It is a medium sized parrot with a red head, rump and underparts. The back is mottled red and black. The cheek patches, outer wing feather and tail are blue. In eastern Australia, some birds have yellow feathers replacing the red found further east. The call is a bell like chiming and a chattering.

These Rosellas wander the forest edges looking for seeds and fruit. They feed in trees and on the ground.

Rosellas pair for life. A courting bird spreads and wags its tail. The female incubates 4-5 white eggs in a tree hollow for 19-21 days. Both parents feed the chicks.
