MARSUPIAL MOLE |
|||||||
The Marsupial Mole is not a mole. It got its name because it looks and behaves like the unrelated true moles. It lives in sandy deserts from central Australia to the north-west coast of WA. This blind rat sized burrower has a silky golden fur. It has no visible ears and its nose is protected by a horny shield. The Marsupial Mole digs tunnels using two blade like claws on each paw. The tunnels collapse after it passes. When it finds an insect or other small creature it grips it with its claws and eats it. A female Marsupial Mole has a rear opening pouch and 2 nipples. Little is know about this creatures habits. Occasionally, usually after rain, someone will find one on the surface. |
