POSSUM

A Possum is a mammal. It lives in Australian trees and houses.
There are four main possums:..

Sugar Glider
The Sugar Glider is found in coastal forests and patches of woodland from the Kimberley in WA, across the north, then down to south-eastern SA and Tasmania. It sometimes lives in nest boxes in gardens.
The sugar gliders are grey to brown above with a dark stripe from the face down the back. It has a gliding membrane stretching from the fifth finger to the first toe on each side of its body.
Sugar gliders live in tree hollows in colonies consisting of up to 7 adults and their young. A group recognises its members by scent. At night the gliders feed on tree sap, nectar, pollen and insects.
A female carries 2 young in her pouch for 2-3 months. They leave the nest aged 4-5 months. At 7-10 months the young leave their group to find a new range. Many do not survive this perilous journey.
Feathertail Glider
This tiny marsupial is the world's smallest gliding mammal. It is found in tall forests and woodlands in eastern Australia.
The Feathertail Glider is mouse sized with grey fur on its back and a white belly. Its long prehensile tail has a fringe of hair on either side. The gliding membranes stretch between elbow and knee.
Groups of up to 20 of these tiny gliders nest together in tree hollows. At night they feed on nectar, which they lick up with brush tipped tongues. They also eat pollen and insects.
The 3-4 young are carried in their mother's pouch fro 9 weks then fed in the nest for 5 weeks.
Ringtail possum
The Ringtail Possum is found in forests and gardens down the east coast of Australia from Cape York Peninsula to Tasmania.
This common possum has short ears and a sleek shite tipped prehensile tail. This tail has a naked area benath it and is used as a fifth limb. Their call is soft, high and twittering.
A Common Ringtail spends the day in a ball shaped, leaf lined nest it builds in a hollow or in dense foliage. At night it eats leaves and flowers. This possum is one of the few animals that can digest eucalypt leaves. Male and female stay together fro the breeding season. They both care for the 2 young. These are carried in the females pouch for 4 months then left in the nest for another 2 months.
Brushtail possum
The common Brushtail possum has adapted well to living with humans. It is found from Queensland to Tasmania and in the far north-west and south-west of WA.
It is a cat sized, tree living, marsupial with a foxy face and long oval ears. The bushy tail has a short naked area underneath. An agile climber, this possum sits upright and holds food in its paws.
The call is a coughing or hissing sound.
Common brushtails spend the day ina tree hollow, cave or ceiling. At night they eat leaves, flowers and fruit.
The male marks his territory with chin, chest and anal glands.
The female carries 1 joey in her pouch fro 4-5 months. It stays with her for another 2 months, often riding on her back.
