DIAMOND (CARPET) PYTHON |
|||||||
This python has two different colour forms called Diamond and the Carpet Pythons. The two forms cover Australia, except for southern Victoria, arid central Australia and the north-west. The Diamond Python has a green-black upper surface with cream or yellow spots forming a diamond pattern. The Carpet Python has a pale to dark brown upper surface with paler blotches, each with a dark border forming a carpet pattern. They grow to an average of 3.5 metres long. This python often hunts and shelters in trees but may hunt on the ground and shelter in burrows of other animals. It tracks birds and small mammals by their body heat, using heat sensitive pits on its lips. Non venomous, it is harmless to humans. A female lays up to 50 eggs then coils around them until they hatch. |
