THORNY DEVIL |
|||||||
The Thorny Devil lives in dry country from the central coast of WA to western Queensland. A medium sized dragon (190 mm in length) with a flattened body and bumpy, spiky skin, it has a tiny head. There is a large two spined hump on the neck. When threatened, the lizard bends its head so the hump becomes a false head. This dragon can slowly change its colour and pattern to match the ground. The Thorny Devil moves around slowly during the day, feeding on small ants (up to 5000 in a meal). It drinks from water falling on its skin, which makes its way through a series of skin grooves to the devil's mouth. A female lays up to 10 eggs in a nest at the end of a long tunnel. The young breed after 3 years and may live to 20 years. |
