FUNNEL WEB SPIDER |
|||||||
Funnel-Web Spiders are found from eastern Queensland south to Tasmania and south-west to the Mt Lofty Ranges, SA. Large to very large ground or tree living spiders, they may be blue black, purple black or dark grey. The cephalothorax bears massive, downwards moving chelicerae, 8 eyes and long leg like pedipalps. The underside of the abdomen has 2 pairs of book lungs and usually 6, sometimes 4, spinnerets. An attacking funnel web raises the front of its body and its front legs off the ground. The venom can be fatal to humans. A funnel web's home is a long, flat tube of silk, placed in a rock crevice, a crack in a tree, or a burrow. The spider sits at the entrance at night. Silk strands warn it of approaching prey or danger. Mature males leave their refuges to wander in search of females. A female lays her eggs in a brood chamber and the young spiders remain there for some time. |
