JEWEL SPIDER |
|||||||
These harmless spiders live in most woodland habitats, especially in tropical and temperate areas. They are often seen near water. They are small, brightly coloured and short legged. The broad, hard, shield like abdomen has up to 6 spines around its edges. The upright orb web has very close threads and may be placed alone or in a group of other webs. The threads supporting the web carry tufts of fluffy white silk. The best known jewel spider is the Christmas Spider, whose female is black, orange and cream with a six pointed abdomen. The male, which is only 3 mm long, has blunt spines. |
