WOLF SPIDER

Wolf Spiders can be found in most habitats, especially near water and, when see, are almost always on the ground.

They are small to very large long legged, ground living spiders. The grey or brown body, which tilts up at the front, is often patterned in a sunburst of grey, brown or orange. The eyes are in 3 rows: 2 back, 2 centre, 4 front.

Many wolf spiders male burrows, these may have lids or collars of silk or a sheet web around them, but many others shelter in cracks. All leave home to search for prey.

A female carries her egg sac attached to her spinnerets. After the young hatch, the female carries them around on her abdomen. Finally, they climb grass blades, spin strands of silk and balloon away.
